CASE STUDY

This case study focuses on three major aspects of the park - context, preservation, and connection. Currently, what surrounds the park are dense residential neighborhoods, including developments that are hundreds of years old. Nestled between the two sides of the park is the Gleisdreieck U-Bahn rapid transit station, a shopping center, and the German Museum of Technology. On the North side runs a side-stream of the large Spree river that runs through the center of Berlin.

The context scale of the exploded axonometric shows the intricate system of train tracks that run across the site, including the pre-WW2 tracks, highlighted in brown, that have been preserved in the park as a callback to the deep history of this site. Exploding the park itself, you can see that the park incorporates a variety of landscapes, all intertwined. Beginning at the top, the hardscapes provide amenities, recreation spaces, and other functional programming to the site. In the middle, large grass meadows allow for all kinds of relaxing activities and opportunities for the users. And lastly, the lowest layer shows areas of the site that have had their wild flora and overgrowth between 1945 and 2006 preserved, creating forests and gardens that speak to the unique characteristics of this former urban wasteland.

Looking at the park in plan what stands out immediately is the angular shape of the park. This speaks heavily to the orthogonal nature of the enclaves that surround the park, creating a connection to its surroundings, as well as connecting the once separated areas of Kreuzberg and Schoneberg that the park is split between. The next form of connection is that to transit, which is characterized by the proximity of the rapid transit station, with major lines that cross directly over the park. Not only does this connect the park to the city as a whole, with thousands of commuters passing through the park daily, but it also creates interesting moments within the park, shown in the section callout. Lastly, due to the large scale of the park, it needs to integrate with the changing topographical conditions at its various access points. The map shows access points based on ground level access vs elevated access, and a section callout illustrates how access challenges are mitigated.
